Case Management
Tangible, goal-directed interactions, support and assistance provided to clients in obtaining needed services and developing short- and long-term resources.
Consent Consent is defined in Mizzou’s policies.
Crisis Intervention
Interactions and activities performed by telephone, text, email or other types of communication, or in person by qualified, trained staff or volunteers with an individual in crisis to stabilize emotions, clarify issues, and provide support and assistance to help explore options for resolution of the individual’s self-defined crisis and needs.

Safely Plan
A customized plan to help clients feel safe on- and off-campus. This can include obtaining parking or house accommodations, stalking documentation, working with campus and/or local police, obtaining an ex-parte and/or full order of protection, applying for the Safe Home program, etc.

Sexual Assault Forensic Exam (SAFE)
A SAFE is typically a medical/forensic exam that includes a physical exam, genital exam and collection of swabs and samples to preserve evidence of a sexual assault. Trained Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners or physicians perform the exams and can provide immediate medical care by treating injuries and offering information about sexually transmitted infections and pregnancy. You can decline any portion of the exam you if you choose. This exam is free but is usually only available up to five days after the assault.
Sexual Assault Nurse Exam (SANE)
A SANE is typically a medical exam done by a sexual assault nurse examiner. The exam is similar to the SAFE but does not include any evidence collection. This exam is free.
Sexual Exploitation
Nonconsensual or abusive sexual advantage of another person for one’s own advantage or benefit or for the advantage or benefit of anyone other than the person being exploited, and which behavior does not constitute any other form of sexual misconduct. Examples of sexual exploitation include, but are not limited to, the following activities done without the consent of all participants:
1. Invasion of sexual privacy;
2. Prostituting another person;
3. Taping or recording of sexual activity;
4. Going beyond the boundaries of consent to sexual activity (e.g., letting your friends hide to watch you engaging in sexual activity);
5. Engaging in voyeurism;
6. Knowingly transmitting an STI, STD, venereal disease or HIV to another person;
7. Inducing another to expose their genitals;
8. Nonconsensual distribution of intimate images;
9. Use or distribution of drugs or alcohol with intent to facilitate sexual contact without consent (i.e., predatory drugs or alcohol).

Trauma
An event or series of events that a person experiences as emotionally or physically harmful that has a lasting adverse impact on their ability to function and their overall well-being.
